How To Be Comfortable During Your Massage: Breast Pillow
Ladies, do you experience discomfort or pressure in your breasts while lying on your stomach? The first thing I want to address is the accessibility of a tool called a breast pillow. See the picture to get a general idea of how this object looks. It offers some cushioning to your shoulders and some space between the table and your upper body. This gives your breasts extra space for comfort. Not all massage therapists will have this available, but here at Massage Solutions, I always ask if ladies would like to try it out. It isn’t for everyone, but those that use it, love it!
Now onto a more general idea of how to deal with discomfort during a massage. Comfort is essential for ensuring a positive and effective experience. Here are some strategies to manage discomfort and communicate effectively with your massage therapist:
Communicate: The most important step is to communicate openly with your massage therapist. If you experience discomfort, pain, or sensitivity during the massage, don't hesitate to speak up. Your therapist can adjust the pressure, technique, or focus areas to ensure your comfort and safety.
Side lying Approach: You don’t have to be on your stomach and back to get an effective massage. The side lying position involves lying on your side using pillows to prop you up into a comfortable position. While this is typically used for pregnant client, this position is available for anyone! Some people feel discomfort on their stomachs and backs. Side lying allows most of the same access, just a different sort of approach. Don’t hesitate to ask about the change in position for your comfort and benefit!
Use Breathing Techniques: Deep breathing can help relax your body and ease tension during the massage. Focus on slow, deep breaths, inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. This can help you relax and manage any discomfort more effectively.
Focus on Relaxation: Try to focus your attention on the areas of your body that feel comfortable and relaxed during the massage. Concentrating on these sensations can help distract you from any discomfort you may be experiencing.
Ask for Modifications: If a particular massage technique or position is causing discomfort, ask your therapist to modify it. For example, if lying face down on the massage table is uncomfortable for your neck or back, your therapist can provide additional pillows or adjust the table's positioning.
Provide Feedback: Throughout the massage, provide feedback to your therapist about what feels good and what doesn't. This helps them tailor the treatment to your preferences and ensure a more comfortable experience. Your massage therapist should ask questions about pressure, temperature, and comfort. Remember it is important that you ENJOY and feel that the work you are receiving is the type of work you want.
Take Breaks: If you're feeling overwhelmed or uncomfortable, don't hesitate to ask for a short break during the session. Your therapist can pause the massage to give you a moment to rest, stretch, or reposition yourself as needed.
Hydrate: Drinking plenty of water before and after your massage can help reduce any soreness or discomfort afterward.
Follow Up: After the massage, pay attention to how your body feels and any lingering discomfort or soreness. If you experience prolonged or intense discomfort, contact your massage therapist to discuss your concerns and any follow-up care recommendations.
Remember that discomfort during a massage is not uncommon, especially if you're addressing areas of tension or tightness in your muscles. However, it's essential to communicate with your therapist to ensure that the treatment remains safe, effective, and tailored to your needs. Your therapist is there to support you throughout the process and help you have a positive and beneficial massage experience.
Here at Massage Solutions, my goal is to create a safe and comfortable experience tailored to your needs and the best approach to your unique situation.
